Buying against the room

We walk storage with the client, list by weight, light tolerance, scale, and ceremony, and draw the floor plan only after the inventory is in. The collection sets the architecture, not the other way round.

Auction houses and dealers

Drouot and Christie's in Paris. Cambi and Il Ponte in Milan. Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr. The better dealers in Greenwich, Salisbury, and the Litchfield Hills. Pieces are bought across years, never as a package, so the room reads as gathered rather than ordered.

A refectory table in English brown oak in the dining room. A pair of nineteenth-century Lombard walnut chairs at the writing desk. A Pierre Jeanneret committee chair as the one mid-century note. A Swedish farm table in the kitchen. A Federal sideboard from a Newtown estate.

Upholstery as architecture

Horsehair on dining seats, mohair on a library club chair, Belgian linen on a parlor sofa, Loro Piana cashmere throws on the reading chair. Restored on the original frame rather than rebuilt.

Lighting
